HISTORY OF MORGAN COUNTY, OHIO, 1980, page 164, GLENN AND MARY JANE S NEWTON - Glenn was born in Pennsville to Walter B (a blacksmith) and Lida Heskett (a teacher) Newton. When he was 11, the family (brother, Ernest; sisters, Gertrude, Goldie and Geraldine) moved to Malta. When Frank Krapps introduced him to his class at Malta school, he said, "Boys, he's a scrapper." Thus, his nickname, "Scrapper." They returned to Penn in two years, where Glenn drove cows to and from pasture, brushed flies off the horses while his dad shod them, and was paper boy for the Columbus Dispatch for 2¢ a copy, and was given a pair of skates as a bonus, which he used to skate on Pidgeon's Pond. He graduated from Penn High. He became an oil field worker, twp. trustee, county commissioner and farmer. While he was commissioner, the court house was redecorated, a new jail was built, and the new Ohio Power plant adjudicated to be in Morgan Co. He met Mary Jane Simpson, daughter of J A and Blanche Smith Simpson of Newton Ridge. After a lengthy and interesting romance, they were married at Bailey church on a crisp November evening. The two potbelly stoves furnished the heat. Candies in the windows provided light for Rev Lowell McCoy to perform the ceremony. The immediate families of the couple were Witnesses. Mary Jane graduated from Muskingum College and Ohio U. At 18, she taught her first year at Rose Hill, a south Windsor one room school; then went to Chadwick. She has fond memories of being over-night guests in many children's homes. Then, to Newsom school in Penn, where in autumn at noon hour they would gig frogs from Bald Eagle creek, and roast the legs over an outdoor fire. During winter months, sleigh riding and skating were great sports. The next was Windsor School, where she taught until retirement in June 1976. She was known to the children as "Miss Mary." Teaching was an interesting and rewarding career. She could truly say. "Kids can say the darndest things." Presently, she and her husband reside on North street in Stockport, and are receiving a blessing from caring for her aged mother. She is a member of Stockport United Methodist church, while Glenn retains his old membership at Pennsville Methodist. Submitted by Glenn and Mary Jane Newton

History of Ohio, by Charles B Galbreath, 1925, Vol V, page 454-455 - ELISHA HUMPHREY, son of John and Rachel Humphrey, was born August 3, 1853, near Raysville, Vinton County, Ohio. He attended the public schools of this county during his early childhood, later entering the Smith Business College of Cincinnati, taking bookkeeping. After completing his course of study he was employed by a furnace company in the capacity of bookkeeper. Resigning this position, he went into the store business at Raysville, where he came acquainted with and married Anna L. Kidnocker, daughter of Robert Kidnocker, the local miller of Salt Creek. Later Mr. Humphrey became interested in the operation of several flour mills in Vinton and Ross counties, finally purchasing the local mill at Omega, Pike County, Ohio. Here he opened a general store in connection with his mill and farm interest. His business grew very rapidly and extended over such a vast territory in Vinton, Ross and Pike counties he soon felt the need of some means of taking better care of this ever increasing business. In 1897 he conceived the idea of constructing a telephone line from Omega, Pike County, to Allensville, Vinton County, via Higby, Richmondale, Vigo and Londonderry. This venture proved even more successful than anticipated, and in 1898 leased the right of way from the Board of Public Works of Ohio along the Ohio and Erie Canal for the construction of telephone line from Omega to Waverly. In this venture he met with certain opposition, as a certain telephone company had been duly organized at Waverly, know as the Columbia Telephone Company, composed of the leading business men of that village, and soon a telephone war was on. At this time it was impossible for Mr. Humphrey to secure an operating franchise in this village, so he proceeded to build around this village leasing right of way from the then Ohio Southern Railroad from the corporate limit of Waverly to Glen Jean. From this point he continued along what is now known as the Scioto Trail to Piketon, Ohio. As the village of Waverly and Piketon still felt the sting of battle on account of removal of the county seat from Piketon to Waverly and Columbia Telephone Company having neglected to develop the Piketon territory, the Humphrey move was cordially received by the people of Piketon, and here the first of the opposition telephone exchanges was opened in a barber shop where the barber (Mr. Spurcl) answered as operator. About this time the Columbia Telephone Company was absorbed by the Central Union Telephone Company, who made some changes in the operating rules and rate charge. This, together with certain other agitation, saw the election of a council for the village of Waverly who were friendly to the Humphrey cause, and anticipating some such move the Humphrey buildings were organized and incorporated as the Home Telephone Company, Waverly, Ohio, in August 1899, E. Humphrey, President, J. N. Huffman, Treasurer, F. E. Dougherty, Secretary. From this time on for several years injunctions, suits for damages, disputed rights of way, together with a development campaign, followed with exchanges established at Beaver, Cynthiana, Idaho, Sinking Springs, Piketon and Waverly, together with the purchase of the local holdings of the Central Union Telephone Company, which was completed in 1912. In 1903 Mr. Humphrey organized the Adams County Telephone Company, Peebles, Ohio, this being the outcome of requests from persons in and around Sinking Springs for telephone connection to their nearest railroad point. This organization proceeded to develop territory in Adams County, establishing exchanges at Peebles, Seaman, Wamsley and West Union, taking over the Central Union holdings in this territory in 1912. The purchase of the holdings of the Central Union Telephone Company carried with it a traffic agreement for the handling of traffic over their lines and those of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company, which completed a universal service for the subscribers of the Humphrey holding. At the time of his death, which occurred in November 1917, Mr. Humphrey was president and general manager of both telephone properties, owning nearly the entire issue of stock.
